Koh Samui holiday

Koh Samui, an island in the Gulf of Thailand, has become increasingly popular with backpackers over the years with the chance to secure a cheap hotel and sample its party atmosphere.

But there is also far more on hand to satisfy the traveller seeking some peace and quiet as clean, sandy beaches abound and turquoise waters offer the opportunity for some scuba diving.

Shopping strips are busy and in abundance, with cheap imitation fashion items readily available, while spas and health resorts are also on offer to help recharge the batteries.

It certainly provides an excellent short break for anyone who has decided to book flights to Thailand but wants to explore the country's many charming off-shore attractions.

Traditions and culture in Koh Samui

Samui culture differs from that of the rest of southern Thailand, perhaps due to the early influence of sea-farers who arrived pre-20th century from Hainan Island in southwest China.

Coconut activity became the norm and the feeling of independence has led the natives to describe themselves as 'chao samui' (Samui folk) rather than Thais.

It has only emerged as a tourist destination in the last 30 years after travellers noticed the charms of such a hidden paradise and spread the word.

During the 80s, Samui's international profile was raised dramatically alongside other favourite backpacker destinations such as Bali and Goa, and it has since become far more accessible with an improved transport infrastructure.

Similarly, the diversity of eateries is impressive, with the opportunity to dine with silver service or grab a burger and chips in equally plentiful supply.

The vast array of bars on the island are also buzzing late into the night, with tourists and locals mixing to create a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

Although there is not a huge amount in the way of cultural sights, the Na Muang Falls are worth a visit, while heading to the villages to meet the true 'chao samui' is also a charming experience.
