Record LNG cargo arrives in Britain Britain took another step towards energy dependency today as a container delivered the largest ever cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) seen on these shores. The Al Khuwair tanker delivered enough LNG (LNG) to supply around 4.5 million homes for a week. Nearly 50 million therms of LNH were imported at the Isle of Grain terminal in north Kent, which is now in its final stages of commissioning as part of a £355 million expansion. It will be capable of supplying 12 per cent of UK gas demand – a vital development according to National Grid's director of UK LNG Peter Boreham. "In less than two years this country will need to be importing more than half of its gas needs, so it's vital that we have modern importation facilities," he said. Centrica LNG director Simon Bonini commented: "LNG will play a pivotal role in maintaining supplies for British Gas customers as North Sea production declines. "This initial shipment is an important step in ensuring we have the ability to import gas from a diverse range of international sources. "Our capacity at Isle of Grain is just one of many strategic investments Centrica is making in new gas and power assets to secure the UK's future energy needs."
