To call or not to call?
How long should you wait?
By Trevor Davis
It's hardly the biggest of dilemmas; if you actually like the girl, you'll make contact eventually rather than chickening out, and if it's really meant to be, then it'll all work out in the end.
Though its mid-90s lingo might have dated slightly, (I'm pretty sure my friends and I would only ever call something "money" in a strictly ironic sense… ), some of the advice remains essential for navigating the dating world.
The most pertinent nugget of wisdom being, of course, the 'wait three days to call a girl' rule. As Vince Vaughan's brilliantly cocky character Trent dictates, "You know I used to wait two days to call anybody, but now it's like everyone in town waits two days. So I think three days is kind of money".
One day is obviously a no-no. After all, you don't want to look too keen, do you? While those unique, slightly-scary women who'd consider marriage after a month of dating are certainly out there, even the slightest betrayal of a hint of desperation on your part could throw the whole train off the rails.
And two days is just a pointless no-man's land, really. All you're doing with a call two days later is saying "I actually wanted to call yesterday, but didn't want to scare you off, so presumed I better wait a bit". Very brave of you. It can't be comfortable sitting on that fence.
But three days… well, that might just do it. It implies that you're far too busy/cool/grounded a person to be so overcome by meeting someone that you couldn't stop yourself from calling, but it also subtly implies to the lady in question that, in spite of just how busy you've been, you couldn't get her out of your head. And if she liked you enough to give you her number, then she's probably going to like the thought that she had an actual effect on you as well.
And from here - well, you're on your own, son. Once you've i) met the girl, ii) got the number, iii) waited the right amount of time and iv) made the call, it's only really you who can screw it up from here. A dodgy joke, a pretentious remark, being too forward, not being forward enough, talking too much, not talking enough… oh, ok, there's LOTS of way in which you could mess it up.
Just don't. As Trent would say: "You're so money and you don't even know it!"
Nope… it's just not cool anymore.
