Govt plans driving crackdown

Stiffer penalties for people who break the speed limit are to be proposed by the government later today.

A consultation out this morning is expected to include proposals toughening up the number of penalty points received by people who speed recklessly.

Additional measures are expected to be put forward tackling those who drive dangerously while taking drugs irresponsibly.

Details of the consultation will be announced to parliament by road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

"We know we can do more and we can reduce the number of people who are killed and seriously injured," he told the Today programme.

There were 2,946 deaths and 33,000 serious injuries this year – the best figures ever.
